Everyone should have basic communication skills in order to communicate effectively. However, basic communication skills are not mastered by many people because they do not take the time to learn how to effectively communicate.
Nonetheless, basic communication skills can be improved upon and learned at any time. So, if you want to improve upon your basic communication skills then review the following basics that everyone should know and incorporate in their daily conversations.
There are two things that occur during a conversation, listening and talking. However, to effectively listen and effectively talk you need to be clear on what you are saying so the other person can hear what you are saying as you mean it. 1.Talking
When you talk, basic communication skills dictate, you need to make sure you know what you are talking about as well as what you want to say. Do not allow yourself to ramble on about different topics that do not correlate or to express contradictory feelings during the same conversation.
This will confuse the listener and the individual will have no idea what the conversation is about or what you really think or feel about the topic at hand. Because of this lack of basic communication skills, the conversation will most likely not be carried on because the listener will stop listening and the conversation will simply die. This is a failure to apply basic communication skills.
To keep this from happening make sure you express your feelings clearly so the listener does not have to interpret what you are saying, but can simply listen.
Also, when using basic communication skills be very specific when carrying on a conversation rather than just talking in general terms. The more specific you are the better the conversation will be. Be specific
2. Listening
Listening effectively is just as important as talking effectively and is key to basic communication skills. You should pay attention and not only listen to the speaker’s words but really hear what is being said. Do not allow yourself to simply assume that you know what the speaker is going to say and go ahead and make judgments.
Instead, use basic communication skills and allow the speaker to finish his thought process and statements. When you really listen and hear what the speaker is saying you will realize that more often than not what you think the speaker is going to say is not what is said at all.
By listening you eliminate many misunderstandings that inevitably occur because people do not listen but assume they already know what is going to be said. In order to have an effective conversation you must listen as well as you talk and you must allow the other person time to listen and time to talk.
Also, always be objective when having a conversation. When you are judging what someone is saying when the conversation is happening you will not be able to truly focus on what is being
said and instead you will not do the conversation justice or really have a true conversation because you are not listening. Again, you will have neglected to apply basic communication skills.
You might think carrying on a conversation is simple and you already know that you must listen as well as talk. However, most people do not do this effectively and as a result misunderstandings are present and generally after a conversation individuals are not able to recall accurately what the conversation was about. So, keep this from happening and learn the basic communication skills.
